U.S. budget deal hopes buoy global shares and commodities

LONDON (Reuters) - World shares hit three-week peaks and commodities were also higher on Thursday as comments from a senior U.S. lawmaker raised hopes of a budget deal by year-end to avoid a fiscal crisis in the world's biggest economy.

With Asian shares higher and the FTSEurofirst 300 index <.fteu3> of top European shares adding 0.5 percent when trading opened, the MSCI global equities index <.miwd00000pus> was up 0.4 percent at 330.74 points, its highest since November 7.

U.S. shares jumped overnight after House of Representatives Speaker John Boehner voiced optimism that Republicans could broker a deal with the White House to avoid a $600 billion crunch of spending cuts and tax hikes dubbed the "fiscal cliff".

"The default assumption appears to be that a deal will be reached before the year-end deadline," said Ian Williams, equity strategist at Peel Hunt.

London's FTSE 100 <.ftse>, Paris's CAC-40 <.fchi> and Frankfurt's DAX <.gdaxi> were all up between 0.3 and 0.6 percent, adding to the week's gains.

As investors returned to riskier assets, the other side of the coin was a retreat from safe-haven German government bonds, pushing benchmark Bund futures down 18 ticks to 142.77.

The main focus of the day for bond markets will be a 6 billion euro auction of Italian 5- and 10- year debt, which should bring Rome close to completing its funding needs for the year and will give an indication of whether a recent rally in higher-yielding bonds will continue.

On the data front, the European Commission's latest sentiment survey will also be closely watched and is expected to show economic conditions in the bloc stabilized in November, albeit at a three-year low.

Italy's business sentiment survey and German unemployment data are also scheduled for release later in the day.

Commodity prices were also supported by the U.S. fiscal deal hopes. Crude oil futures rose 0.4 percent to $86.86 a barrel, and Brent inched up 0.3 percent to $109.82.

In currency markets, the euro was at $1.2960, well above Wednesday's intraday low of $1.2880.

The dollar, which has seen a corrective pull-back versus the yen since hitting a 7-1/2 month high, edged up 0.1 percent to about 82.15 yen.

"I can feel a bit of long dollar/yen fatigue setting in," said Jeffrey Halley, FX trader for Saxo Capital Markets in Singapore.

Immune system could play a central role in age-related macular degeneration

ScienceDaily (Nov. 27, 2012) ? Changes in how genes in the immune system function may result in age-related macular degeneration (AMD), the leading cause of visual impairment in older adults, based on preliminary research conducted by National Institutes of Health (NIH) investigators.

"Our findings are epigenetic in nature, meaning that the underlying DNA is normal but gene expression has been modified, likely by environmental factors, in an adverse way," said Dr. Robert Nussenblatt, chief of the National Eye Institute (NEI) Laboratory of Immunology. Environmental factors associated with AMD include smoking, diet, and aging. "This is the first epigenetic study revealing the molecular mechanisms for any eye disease."

The study identified decreased levels of DNA methylation, a chemical reaction that switches off genes, on the interleukin-17 receptor C gene (IL17RC). The lack of DNA methylation led to increased gene activity and, in turn, increased levels of IL17RC proteins in patients with AMD. IL17RC is a protein that promotes immune responses to infections, such as fungal attacks.

The study, conducted by research teams from the NEI and other NIH institutes, including the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute and the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine; the University of Melbourne, Australia; and Oregon Health and Science University, appears in the Nov. 29 issue of Cell Reports.

"Our study also suggests IL17- and IL17RC-mediated immune responses can be crucial in causing AMD," added Dr. Lai Wei, also of NEI's Laboratory of Immunology and first author on the paper. "By measuring IL17RC gene activity in at-risk patients, we have also potentially identified an early method to detect AMD."

AMD damages the light-sensitive cells of the macula, the central part of the retina that allows us to see fine visual detail. As the disease progresses, patients encounter great difficulty reading, driving, or performing hobbies and tasks that require hand-eye coordination. Treatments exist to prevent severe vision loss in certain types of advanced AMD but none prevent or cure the disease. Currently, 2 million Americans have advanced AMD and another 7 million have intermediate stages.

Recent studies have identified several genes with alterations that increase the risk of developing the disease. In addition, environmental risk factors have also been suggested as possible causes of the disease. One explanation may be that environmental exposures influence DNA methylation, which regulates gene expression. Changes in this process may result in the production of too much or too little of a gene's protein, leading to cellular dysfunction and disease. Changes in DNA methylation have been implicated in cancer, lupus, multiple sclerosis, and many other diseases.

To test whether changes in DNA methylation might play a role in AMD, the investigators evaluated three pairs of twins -- one pair identical and two pairs fraternal -- where only one of the siblings had AMD. Identical twins have the same genetic makeup while fraternal twins share about half of their DNA. Because of their similar genetic backgrounds, identical and fraternal twins can be helpful in studying the differences between the effects of genetics and the environment. When compared with the unaffected twins, methylation patterns were altered in 231 genes of affected twins. This finding is consistent with the hypothesis that environmental exposures may epigenetically regulate expression of many genes and lead to AMD.

Among the 231 genes, the investigators found that DNA methylation was absent in a region of the IL17RC gene in twins with AMD. The lack of methylation in the IL17RC gene led to increased gene activity and, in turn, increased levels of its protein in circulating blood. The investigators further validated these findings by comparing seven siblings with and without AMD as well as 202 AMD patients and 96 control subjects without the disease. These studies also found increased IL17RC levels in circulating blood and, most importantly, in the retina of patients with AMD but not controls.

Based on these results, the authors propose that chronic increased levels of the IL17RC protein in the retina likely promote inflammation and recruitment of immune cells that damage the retina and lead to AMD.

"This study strongly implicates epigenetic DNA methylation as another crucial biological pathway for understanding the molecular basis of AMD," according to Nussenblatt.

The investigators next plan to evaluate what environmental factors may be responsible for the regulation of IL17RC and how the epigenetic regulation leading to the chronic inflammation in AMD patients can be reversed by novel therapies. They will also evaluate the role of epigenetics in other eye diseases.

Before You Say I Do: Opposite Sex Friendships ? Waila Caan

Hello People!

I don?t know what?s going on with this blog so if you do, please let me know! These days I can?t be bothered to write and I don?t even have the time to. My every waking moment is accounted for so much so that sometimes I just rebel and do nothing. My mind has been temporarily taken over by all things wedding but I refuse to blog about my wedding planning process, not unless I?ve got something particularly interesting to share with you.

The other thing also on my mind these days is marriage?and you know marriage is not the same thing as a wedding right? Lol. Marriage is the equal parts terrifying and exciting bit that comes after the wedding. In the last year, I?ve read a number of books on marriage and relationships and have also attended two pre-marital courses. One at Jesus House (JH), my home church, and the other at Holy Trinity Brompton (HTB).? I?ve consumed so much literature on the topic and listened to so many lectures, I feel ready to write my own ?Making Marriage Work? manual. Lol.

Given the zone I?m currently in, I thought I?d share a few of the interesting and sometimes controversial topics from the courses with you.

On the HTB course, a couple gave a talk about managing your other relationships once you?re married, particularly friendships with the opposite sex. I expected that. When I started dating the gentleman the dynamics of my relationships with my male friends changed, and understandably so. During the course of the talk, they mentioned that they had decided as a couple, that they weren?t allowed to hang out one on one with members of the opposite sex. That?s when it got interesting. I have no intention of conducting clandestine liaisons with other men (not unless they are Justin Gatlin or Mark Foster) but to ban myself from going to lunch with one of the guys in my team or an old friend from Uni?

They weren?t proposing that we all adopt the same rules, they were just giving an example of some of the rules they have in place to protect their relationship. While I completely understood the reasoning behind it, I don?t know that it?s a rule I want to impose. I have no problem with the gentleman having the odd catch up with a female friend. Odd being the key word. Once a week is not odd, once every quarter or thereabouts is. Lol.

As far as managing opposite sex friendships is concerned, I think the key things are transparency, accountability and sensitivity. If you?re having that odd catch up with a female friend, tell me about it. Tell me where you?re going, when you?ll be home and make it by decent o?clock. Make the effort to introduce me to that friend and include me in some of the catch ups so I get to know her too and get comfortable with her. Invite her over. Over time, the idea is for his friends to become my friends and vice versa seeing as two are becoming one. If for any reason I?m uncomfortable with the friendship, take me seriously and curb the interactions.

What do you think? Are you okay with your man or woman having the odd coffee or lunch with a friend of the opposite sex?

(AP) ? Hope Solo diffused the drama surrounding her personal life as the gold medal-winning U.S. women's soccer team prepared for an exhibition match against Ireland.

"My life is great," the goalkeeper said. "My life is happy."

Solo made her first appearance with the national team since she was married to former NFL tight end Jerramy Stevens in Washington state on Nov. 13, a day after his arrest at a party for domestic violence. A judge determined there wasn't enough evidence to hold Stevens, but the matter remained under investigation.

Solo spoke after a workout with her fellow U.S. teammates at Portland's downtown Jeld-Wen Field. The national team plays Ireland on Wednesday night on its U.S. appreciation tour following a 2-1 victory over Japan in the final match at the London Games.

"It's unfortunate what the media can do to judge before the facts are out there. It's hard to see, but it's a hard truth, and it's part of life," she said. "I'm happy. I'm happily married. I would never stand for domestic violence. I've never been hit in my life."

Solo has had a stellar career with the national team, helping the team to two straight Olympic gold medals. But she's never shied from attention: From her Twitter criticism of former national team member Brandi Chastain during the London Games to appearing on TV's "Dancing with the Stars."

Police say that they were called to a disturbance at a home in Kirkland, a Seattle suburb, in the early morning hours on Nov. 12. Solo and her brother blamed a disturbance on three unknown men. Officers maintained they had probable cause to arrest Stevens because they observed evidence of an altercation, including a cut on Solo's elbow, and his admission that the two had argued, according to court documents.

The next day, Solo and Steven were married. Solo, 31, posted a smiling photo of herself with Stevens, 33, to Twitter two days later.

Stevens was selected with the No. 28 pick of the 2002 draft by the Seahawks after a stellar career at Washington. But he also was involved in incidents away from football that included reckless driving charges for crashing into a nursing home.

His best season with the Seahawks as in 2005 when he started a career-high 12 games and had 45 receptions as the Seahawks won the NFC championship.

Solo also went to Washington. The two started dating following the London Games.

"Like I said, we're happy, and ultimately that's all that matters," she said.

Wednesday's match is the sixth of the U.S. team's Fan Tribute Tour.

Jill Ellis, women's development director for U.S. soccer, is coaching the U.S. team against Ireland. Former Australian national team coach Tom Sermanni takes over the national team in January, replacing Olympic coach Pia Sundhage, who stepped down.

Ireland and the United States will play again in Glendale, Ariz., on Dec. 1 as the tour continues.

Seattle Seahawks cornerbacks Richard Sherman and Brandon Browner continue to deny that they have ever taken performance-enhancing substances despite facing four-game suspensions for testing positive.

According to Mike Garafolo of the USA Today, Sherman is saying that he unknowingly ingested Adderall prescribed to a teammate according to a person familiar with Sherman?s explanation. Sherman?s agent, Kevin Poston, would not speak on the specifics of the case but when presented with the scenario described Poston said, ?What appears is not always the case. Hopefully, when the facts come out, justice will prevail.?m

Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network also reported the scenario described by Garafolo.

Sherman, however, is completely denying that?s what took place. In a series of texts Monday night, Sherman disputed the accounts being reported by the USA Today and NFL Network.

?It?s totally false,? Sherman said. ?It will be resolved in time and I have never taken anything.?

Sherman has denied ever taking Adderall since the suspensions were first reported on Sunday.

Browner?s agent, Peter Schaffer, also denied the claims against him client.

?I can tell you that Brandon Browner has no knowledge of how any illegal substance could have gotten into his system,? Schaffer said. ??He takes tremendous care of his body and he is very careful with what he puts into it. We?re exploring all avenues to try and figure out how any substance out of the ordinary would be in his system.?

Per Garafolo, Browner is already in the league?s substance-abuse program following an undisclosed incident while playing for the Denver Broncos in 2005. Jason La Canfora of CBSSports.com was on Sports Radio KJR in Seattle Monday morning and relayed Browner?s denial of taking any performance-enhancing substance knowing how frequently he is tested due to being in the substance-abuse program.

?[Browner]?s someone who?s tested regularly; up to three times a week,? La Canfora said. ?So he?s told people, ?look, I knew what I was up against. I don?t even drink a beer because I?m so wary of having a positive for anything.? So he?s been adamant that ?I?m not on anything. I?ve gone out of my way not to put any sort of substance, supplement, or anything other than what you would normally eat and drink.??

Schaffer said they received notice from the league about the positive tests last week. He said normally hearings for these matters are usually scheduled within 20 days of the notice being sent but circumstances could require it to take longer. Schaffer said he wasn?t sure how long it would take for this particular hearing to come about.

?It?s too early to tell what we?re going to need, what witnesses and evidence and experts are going to be required so there is no way to even guess at this point,? he said.

Until those appeals are resolved, both Browner and Sherman are eligible to play for the Seahawks. Head coach Pete Carroll said Monday that he fully expects to have them available for this Sunday?s game against the Chicago Bears.

Be Patient With Social Media & Networking ? It Takes Time - Talinorfali

In this new generation and in time of social media and networking with this new age in Internet communications technology with information being transmitted in seconds all over the world with so many types of gadgets and electronic devices, I am sure business people, bloggers, advertisers, designers, web designers, those seeking employment, social marketing, promoters feel the pressure of so much competition going on around them with networking and all the time spent with promotions, making a living with billions of people on the world wide web, and As I am sure my fellow bloggers and I feel the pressure all the time. It is an interesting time we live in these days with everything simplified for us and how incredible time has changed with the new age in technology. Now although most companies want you to send an electronic mail resume and cover letter to the employer and sometimes you wonder are they deleting it or are they really reading the resume and cover letter? There maybe 200 applicants for that position. Nowadays it?s become so hard to seek employment because so many people are seeking the same things. Its become such a stressful time, but I believe that patience and getting the right networking and knowing the right people will get you there. Unfortunately it is like that now. It is not a matter of what you know anymore, it is who you know in that company or a referral.

It is just like the way it takes time to build your online profile, sometimes it takes less. It depends on how you promote yourself and how you portray yourself. It takes a lot of patience, determination, dedication to get on up there. The internet has many people, and if social networking, marketing, promotions, writing, blogging, and being a guest blogger for any company or anyone, and if it is your calling, do it, and charge people with a decent amount and do research on how much you should charge for your services, and if you are good at what you do, and how you do it, they will hire you, no problem. Hey, were all great at doing something in the world, and it is important to get yourself out there and not be afraid of taking chances and doing the best of your ability, Creating an online profile for yourself is great, a portfolio is great so that you can share your accomplishments, and when people give you blogging awards, inspirational awards, and if you are on so many peoples blog sites with ping backs, link backs, these are all a plus and when you include all this in your page, you will be praised and you will go to great lengths.

In recent weeks, I have been more interactive with my fans, and those who come to my blog and I try to reply to as many comments as I am able to. I love visiting other peoples blogs, and give them a boost. I know some people struggle to get people to come to their blogs to read what is happening in their world and what they are up to and among writing for a living and making something out of themselves. It takes a long time and I do feel what they are feeling. I started blogging in another blog provider on Google, and I was not getting anywhere and in one year I had about 5000 people only visiting my site and I felt like I was getting no where. My friend suggested WordPress and I said, let me make an account there and in no time at all, the stats kept increasing and when I began to write more and make more content, things just took off from there. I know some of my blogs require improvement on my writing style, and little bit of the grammar, but I am learning and It is never too late to learn. Social Networking is such a great tool and it will take time and effort, but working at it hard will get you to places, you wouldn?t even imagine.

Maintaining your blog, and maintaining your social networking profiles with new content, and also when you create a twitter account and know how to tweet, you will see a big difference and you will see many people and companies starting to follow you. When you are on Facebook, be mindful to know what your posting and how you are posting it. It is good to keep your standards and everything about you high. Keep your head up high, and do not write so many negative status messages and negative quotes as people pick up on it and they wouldn?t want to engage and be interested with someone who is always bringing themselves down. Bring yourself up, and always write about positivity, determination and things you are good at, and qualities that you have. It is important to put yourself out there with the right attitude, enthusiasm and mean what you say when you write positivity and when you say nice things and be kind to others, and make yourself and your reputation high, the sky is the limit and you will have so many offers and so many opportunities knocking, but it all starts with the way you portray your character and your willingness to try and do your best. You can do it, and will see how you will improve.

How you social network and how you deal with situations online will always be something people will remember and don?t be afraid to put your name out there, because your social networking profile will be like your business card and its important to put a nice and professional photo of yourself or a nice photo of you everywhere and keep that trend going. There are many websites such as facebook, twitter, pinterest, YouTube, linkedin, myspace, and more websites that will make it easy for you, but it is all up to you and in your hands on how you deal with the way you handle yourself online. When your a blogger and when your a dedicated blogger, and want to excel and do your best, engage with other authors and those who have published books in the past and contact them and ask them how its done and what is involved. The internet is the biggest research hub of the world. You can find all the tips and tricks and contact information to people. You will be amazed.

Try it out for yourself and see where you will go with life.? Enjoy the whole process and do not be afraid. All the best in your journey!

How to Become Recertified in Pet Loss Grief Counseling

November 22nd, 2012 by admin

There are already a significant number of pet loss grief counselors in the United States. They have been certified to offer mental health and emotional support in a unique field. However, those with certification should be aware of the requirements to get recertified. Certification typically lasts three years. To be eligible to renew pet loss grief certification, the medical doctor, nurse or minister must have been actively practicing. In other words, it may be desirable to reapply several months before current certifications are due to lapse. The counselor must have been in practice for about 500 hours or more during the last two or three years. He or she should also have had 50 hours of continuing education. The standards for pet loss grief continuing education are somewhat tolerant and can include seminars and college courses. Publications in academic journals may meet up to half of the 50 hour requirement.

What's the Best Way to Save on Shipping When I Shop Online?

What's the Best Way to Save on Shipping When I Shop Online?Dear Lifehacker,
I'm planning on doing most of my shopping online this year. The gifts I'm buying are expensive enough; do I have to pay for shipping too? How can I cut down on shipping costs when I shop online?

Sincerely,
Stingy Shipper

Dear Stingy Shipper,
A lot of popular retailers offer free shipping over the holiday shopping season, but not all of them do. That doesn't mean you always have to pay for shipping when you buy online. Here are some ways to save on those exorbitant shipping costs, and sometimes avoid them completely.

Shop at Amazon Using Amazon Prime and Super Saver Shipping

What's the Best Way to Save on Shipping When I Shop Online? No discussion of free shipping is complete without mentioning Amazon Prime. $79/year gets you free 2-day shipping on all qualifying purchases from Amazon and Amazon resellers, not to mention its other benefits. Plus, Prime is easy to get if you know someone with it and cheap if you're a student. If you do any Amazon shopping over the holidays, Prime pretty much pays for itself after a few purchases. Even if you tend to wait for the last minute (like I do) the $3.99/item next-day shipping option is much better than overnight if you're not a Prime subscriber.

Even if you're not willing to pay for Prime, keep an eye out for items that qualify for Super Saver Shipping, so you can get free shipping on your order after you rack up $25 worth of items. If you're having trouble finding $25 worth of stuff, head into Amazon Grocery, where almost everything qualifies, or use the previously mentioned Amazon Filler Item Finder to put your cart over the top.

Sign Up with A Free Shipping Service

What's the Best Way to Save on Shipping When I Shop Online? If you shop online at multiple sites, you can always sign up for a shipping service. ShopRunner is the most notable of these, and offers free 2-day shipping on all of your purchases from dozens of online and brick-and-mortar retailers, including Newegg, Lord and Taylor, Drugstore.com, Blue Nile, Chefs, Toys R' Us, and more. The service will set you back $79/yr or $9/mo, and comes with a host of other membership benefits. You can also opt to pick up your order from local ShopRunner locations if they're available in your area, and the service offers free shipping on returns too if you don't get what you wanted or something's wrong with your order. The nice thing about going this route is that you get many of the features of a service like Amazon Prime, only across dozens of sites instead of just one.

Search for Retailers Offering Free Shipping or Use Coupon Codes to Make Up Shipping Costs

This is the time of year where free shipping abounds, and there's no better way to make sure you get free shipping and reward retailers that offer it than to speak with your dollars and shop with them. Even if free shipping is only offered for a short period, take advantage of it?if it's successful, the retailer will do it again. You'd be surprised how many online retailers pay close attention to the success or failure of small campaigns like a weekend of free shipping when it comes time to decide whether they should do it again later in the shopping season or next year. If the retailer is a brick-and-mortar retailer and you're shopping online, many sites offer free shipping if you're willing to pick it up at your local store.

What's the Best Way to Save on Shipping When I Shop Online? Similarly, dig deep for deals and coupon codes, either on some of our favorite deal sites or coupon sites like RetailMeNot, CouponChief, and CouponCodes.com to see if there are active codes for free shipping. FreeShipping.org is a whole site dedicated to free shipping discount codes (even though they've branched out into other coupon codes as well.) Even if there aren't, you may be able to snag a tidy discount on your purchase that'll offset the cost of shipping.

Finally, keep your eyes peeled for Free Shipping Day, scheduled for December 17th, 2012, where dozens of retailers will offer free shipping on purchases just in time for the holidays. Free Shipping Day is actually the brainchild of the people behind FreeShipping.org, and so far they have over 800 large and small retailers participating in the event, and plan to have over 1,000. Like any "shopping holiday" though, make sure the prices you pay for the things you buy are worth the money, and the retailer hasn't just marked up the items you want to cover their shipping costs. The goal is to save money, after all.

You Can't Avoid All Shipping Fees, But You Can Minimize Them

Many retailers just can't afford to eat shipping costs for their products, even if they're large and well known brands. If it really burns you to pay shipping on your order, call and ask the retailer to waive the cost, or if they can help you out with a discount code or gift card to cover the shipping costs. Online retail is a fiercely competitive business. If you ask nicely and aren't a jerk, the retailer may waive your shipping just to keep your business (or the service rep you speak to may do it just because you're nice and treat them like a human being.)

Small, independent retailers and craft shops like Etsy are usually run by one or a small group of people, and eating shipping costs means they don't make money and can't stay afloat. You'll get awesome gifts and gear from those shops, but there's little chance you'll get free shipping, even if you ask. Instead, plan ahead and make sure you have plenty of time to get the item sent to you, and choose the most affordable shipping you can trust. That way you get a good deal on a great item, and even if you have to pay a little in shipping, you didn't have to shell out for overnight or expedited.

We hope this helps! Happy shopping, and we hope you find some bargains (and don't pay too much to get them to your door in the process!)

Sincerely,
Lifehacker
