Ewen McKenzie named new Australia coach

Deans stood down following the Wallabies' 2-1 series defeat against the British and Irish Lions and the Australian Rugby Union has now confirmed former Test prop McKenzie (above) as his successor.

ARU chief executive Bill Pulver said: "Having established the necessary criteria, and spoken to the relevant people, we were convinced that Ewen was now the man to take the Qantas Wallabies forward."

Deans' resignation came after the Wallabies' 41-16 defeat in Saturday's third Test against the British and Irish Lions in Sydney, which saw the tourists complete a 2-1 series win.

An ARU statement read: "Qantas Wallabies head coach Robbie Deans has announced this morning he is stepping down from the role effective immediately."

The governing body had already been reviewing Deans' performance as he approached the end of his contract, which was due to expire at the end of the year.

"We have been conducting that due diligence over the last few months, taking into account broad criteria for coach selection," Pulver said.

"Consideration was given to leadership skills, discipline, coaching capability, coaching records, and important factors such as character, values and style of play.

"Therefore, we were well prepared depending on how the year unfolded.

"Robbie resigning in the wake of the Lions Tour did not catch us unprepared to move forward with a replacement.

"(McKenzie's) opportunity comes quickly, with the Castrol EDGE Rugby Championship and the opening match of that competition - the Bledisloe Cup showdown with the All Blacks on August 17."

McKenzie represented Australia in 51 Tests and was part of the World Cup-winning squad of 1991.

He served as their assistant coach for three years under Rod McQueen and then Eddie Jones in the early 2000s and subsequently coached the Australia A team.

At club level he has led the the Waratahs and Stade Francais before his most recent assignment at Queensland Reds, with whom he won the Super Rugby title in 2011 and topped the Australian conference again the following year.

He said at a press conference today: "I'm really pleased to be able to accept the job of Wallaby coach.

"I'm pretty proud right now, pretty privileged to be able to get that opportunity.

"Right here and now I've been asked to do a very specific job, that job starts in five weeks' time. There's no better coaching assignment than to pit yourself against the All Blacks.

"I've played and coached in a bunch of Bledisloe Cup games and to get another crack at the All Blacks is terrific. I'm really looking forward to the challenge of taking them on and from that, good things can flow.

"It's a really important time in Australian rugby. On the field, people will worry about where the Wallabies are at. I'm looking forward to the challenge of making a difference in that and in the game as a whole."

Deans, who led the Wallabies in 74 Tests having been appointed following the 2007 World Cup, took his leave following the 41-16 defeat to the Lions in Sydney that sealed a 2-1 series win for the tourists.

He said: "I wish to take this opportunity to thank everyone involved in Australian rugby for their support through the duration of my tenure. It has been a rewarding five years and I am proud of all that we have achieved.

"Most especially I would like to thank the players for their efforts and wish them all the best going forward."

Pulver added: "Robbie came into the job in 2008, improved our away record almost immediately, delivered a Tri Nations title in 2011 and has been a significant part of a Lions Tour that overshadows any other rugby event in Australia since the 2003 Rugby World Cup.

"We wish him all the best in his future endeavours and to build further on what is one of world rugby's most impressive coaching resumes."

New Zealand-born Deans led the Wallabies to third place in the 2011 World Cup and to the Tri Nations title the same year but never delivered the Bledisloe Cup - the trophy presented for series between Australia and the All Blacks.

India`s civilian aircraft plan expected to get nod

India`s civilian aircraft plan expected to get nod New Delhi: India's dream project of building mid-size civilian aircraft is expected to get a nod tomorrow at a high-level meeting convened by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to discuss measures to boost the manufacturing sector.

The meeting of the High Level Committee on Manufacturing will also discuss ways to boost steel production and textile exports besides the launch of pilot project on electric and hybrid vehicles for Delhi.

One of the most crucial decisions expected at the meeting is the go-ahead for the preparatory work on building a mid- size civilian aircraft having medium range, sources said.

India`s civilian aircraft plan expected to get nod

The proposal to build an indigenous 90-seater aircraft has been in the pipeline for a number of years.

According to the proposal, the design and development of the aircraft is expected to cost Rs 4,355 crore and series production would entail further expenditure of Rs 3,200 crore.

The aircraft is to be built through a collaborative venture of Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), National Aerospace Laboratories (NAL), the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research and DRDO. It will be take some years to be ready for flight.

India`s civilian aircraft plan expected to get nod

Earlier, Bangalore-based NAL had earlier developed India's first multi purpose 14-seater civilian aircraft Saras. But on March 6, 2009, two IAF test pilots along with a flight test engineer were killed when the second prototype crashed 30 km from Bangalore.

The meeting is also expected to finalise an action plan to develop production capacity in advanced alloys and composites. A pilot project on electric and hybrid vehicles for Delhi is also expected to be worked out.

The meeting will also deliberate on a plan to boost textile industry and exports, given the price advantages India has in this sector.

Japan's Olympus to raise up to $1.17 billion in share issue

TOKYO (Reuters) - Japan's Olympus Corp said it will raise up to 118 billion yen ($1.17 billion) in a new share issue to expand its medical equipment business and rebuild its financial health, after an accounting scandal plunged the company into the red.

The shares will be offered to overseas investors, mainly in the United States and Europe, the world's biggest endoscope maker said in a statement on Monday.

Olympus, which counts Sony Corp as its largest shareholder, is marketing its shares to foreigners as Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's economic stimulus measures boost global appetite for Japanese shares.

The company's shares lost more than 80 percent of their value in the months following a $1.7 billion accounting fraud. They are now about one-quarter above their pre-scandal level, rebounding in line with a Japanese stock market rally.

Olympus became entangled in one of Japan's biggest accounting scandals in October 2011 as its British chief executive turned whistleblower and revealed details of investment losses the camera and medical equipment company hid for decades.

The latest share offering was announced less than a week after guilty verdicts and suspended sentences for three former executives marked the end of the scandal.

Last year Olympus raised 50 billion yen through a third-party allocation of shares to business partner Sony.

Olympus will use the bulk of the funds it is raising to bolster its medical business, including 19.7 billion yen to build three medical equipment factories. Two will be located in Fukushima prefecture, the site of the 2011 nuclear disaster.

It will issue 32 million new shares with an option to sell as many as 5 million additional shares in an overallotment.

Olympus, which controls roughly 70 percent of the global market for gastrointestinal endoscopes, will also sell 4 million of its own common stock.

The shares will be sold through brokerages SMBC Nikko Capital Markets, UBS Limited and Morgan Stanley.

Many Japanese companies are tapping the rallying domestic market to raise funds, with foreign investors helping to boost share prices.

Dentsu Inc , Japan's largest advertising agency, last week said it would raise about 120 billion yen from the sale of new shares and treasury stock to help pay down debt for an acquisition.

Louisiana GOP Councilman Seeks Gay-Pride Flag Ban

A Republican city councilman in Louisiana is crafting a bill to ban the gay-pride rainbow flag from being flown on public buildings after receiving a complaint from a local veteran.

City-Parish Councilman Andy Naquin began working on a proposal that would limit the flags that can be flown on government buildings after receiving a complaint from Korean War veteran Ray Green who said that he was offended when he saw the gay-pride flag flying in Girard Park, which is on Lafayette government property, following the Supreme Court ruling on the Defense of Marriage Act and California's Proposition 8, The Daily Advertiser reports.

"I had to agree with him," Naquin said. "Government flagpoles really should be meant to fly only government flags."

Naquin told The Daily Advertiser that he is working on a proposal with City-Parish Attorney Mike Hebert on a city ordinance that would limit the flags that could be flown on public buildings to American, Louisiana, Acadian/Louisiana Consolidated Government flags, and, maybe, Mardi Gras flags.

"I did not go overseas and fight for our country so that we could come back and be subject to something like that," Green told The Daily Advertiser. "Several of us [veterans] feel that the flying of this flag is a poke in the eye of a way of life."

Amanda Kelley, president of the Acadiana OUTspoken Alliance, a support group for the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transsexual community in the area said that the rainbow flag was flown to celebrate National Pride Month and in celebration of the Supreme Court decision.

"That, to me, seems like a violation of freedom of speech," Kelley said of the proposal. "It wasn't intended to insult or hurt anyone."

Obama to outline second-term tech plan for 'smarter' government

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Barack Obama will describe on Monday his second-term plan for "smarter government" by using technology and data to deliver services faster and save taxpayers money, the White House said.

Obama will meet privately with his cabinet on Monday morning about the plan and then make public remarks at 11:50 a.m. (1550 GMT).

The White House said the plan would build on progress made so far in opening up government data to entrepreneurs and in modernizing government services.

In Obama's first term, the effort helped the administration reduce technology costs by more than $2.5 billion, the White House said.

Hertz announces Ford Mustang-based Hertz Penske GT rental car: Hot Mustang is a 'Rent-a-Racer' you're not supposed to race

Hot Mustang is a 'Rent-a-Racer' you're not supposed to race

Hertz Penske GT Mustang rental car unveiled Hertz
You won't have to wait long to rent the Hertz Penske GT. Just don't drive it too fast once you get the keys. And be sure to return it with a full tank.

There's nothing wrong with your basic cloth-interior rental cars, but there are times when you want to stumble off the plane and into something a bit more stimulating than a CVT-equipped Versa.

Fortunately, rental car companies seem to be willing to answer the enthusiast call. Last week we told you about the Hertz Dream Car lineup and its $1,500-per-day Ferraris, but the company has also developed the muscle-car oriented Adrenaline Collection.

The Adrenaline Collection ditches the exotics for homegrown horsepower, including Chevrolet Camaro SS coupes and convertibles, Corvette convertibles, the Dodge Challenger R/T and the Ford Mustang GT Premium.

Hertz Penske GT Mustang unveiling Hertz

The range-topper, however, is the just-announced Hertz Penske GT. An off-track result of the Hertz/Penske Racing collaboration, the Hertz Penske GT starts out as a Ford Mustang GT, but gets a handful of interior and performance upgrades borrowed from across the Mustang lineup.

There are 3.55 gears, Recaro seats, a Boss 302 front splitter, a GT500 rear valance, quad-tip exhausts and a tuned 5.0-liter V8 along with a striking custom black/yellow racing stripe exterior appearance package. We've contacted Hertz about transmission availability but haven't heard back yet.

1966 Hertz Shelby GT350-H front 3-4 Canepa.com

If the thought of a hot yellow-on-black Hertz Mustang seems oddly familiar, fear not. The rental car company has employed the same formula a couple of times over the past half-century -- only the late Carroll Shelby has been responsible for the modifications up to this point.

The most famous -- or notorious -- of these hot Hertzes has to be the 1966 Hertz GT 350-H; as gearhead legend has it, the cars were often returned to rental lots absolutely thrashed after a weekend at the track.

Hertz revived that formula 40 years later, offering Shelby GT-H mustangs for rent in 2006 and 2007.

Though the old Shelby Mustangs were billed as ?Rent-a-Racers? you're probably not going to want to thrash the Hertz Penske GT too hard. The $180/day rental fee only covers 100 miles, after which extra fees apply -- and you won't have to drive very far at something approaching top speed before you hit that limit. Besides, as with the exotics Hertz offers, you're not supposed to take the track-ready Hertz Penske GT racing. Bogus.

With those caveats in mind, know that you'll be able to rent the Hertz Penske GT from 15 airport locations later this year. Exact availability hasn't been announced, but other cars in the Adrenaline Collection can be had everywhere from Miami to Las Vegas to Salt Lake City to Los Angeles.

Social media infiltrates Zimmerman trial

SANFORD, Fla. (AP) ? Trayvon Martin's fatal shooting garnered worldwide attention when the man who fatally shot him wasn't arrested for weeks ? a backlash fueled largely by social media. Now, social media sites such as Twitter and Facebook have permeated George Zimmerman's trial both inside and outside the courtroom.

A witness who testified via Skype was inundated with calls from other users on the Internet-based phone service, and a defense attorney was tripped up by a photo his daughter posted on Instagram. Jurors and witnesses have been grilled about their postings and whom they follow.

Social media has become inextricably tied to daily life, a fact reflected by its presence in Zimmerman's murder trial. The trial is a top trend almost daily, with thousands of people tweeting their thoughts with the hashtag #ZimmermanTrial. Witnesses have tweeted about their testimony, including Martin's friend Rachel Jeantel, who after tense questioning became the brunt of spoof accounts poking fun at her candid statements and dialect.

It's not the first time social media has become the backbone of a high-profile criminal case: Casey Anthony's trial on charges she murdered her 2-year-old daughter, Caylee, was closely watched, too. Photos posted on social media accounts showing Anthony's partying in the days after her daughter's disappearance became a key point in the case.

Zimmerman, a former neighborhood watch volunteer, has pleaded not guilty to second-degree murder and says he shot the unarmed 17-year-old Martin in self-defense during a scuffle in the townhome complex where he lived and Martin was visiting his father and his father's fiancee.

Among the first to publicize the story was nationally syndicated radio host Michael Baisden, who sent a message to his 65,000 Twitter followers and 585,000 Facebook fans: "Unarmed 17-year-old boy shot by neighborhood watch captain in Sanford, FL outside of Orlando." It provided a link to a story. Soon afterward, Martin's parents started an online petition on Change.org demanding Zimmerman's arrest. It generated more than 2.2 million signatures.

The trial began with attorneys scouring potential jurors' profiles, using Facebook postings to keep two off the jury. Witnesses haven't been immune, either, a fact Zimmerman's lead defense attorney recently acknowledged.

"So it's been an amazing sort of umbrella in this case, the whole sort of social media presence, and what it means both in investigation, to interaction, to now having to react to it as lawyer," attorney Mark O'Mara recently told reporters.

Zimmerman's team was no stranger to social media before the trial began, using Twitter and a website to raise money for his defense and make public statements. Still, experts say the legal profession is still catching up to technology so easily accessed on smartphones.

"The law is always a little bit behind, or sometimes a lot behind, the rest of the culture, so the law is still trying to figure out whether or not we should be treating social media as a given," said Mary Anne Franks, a law professor at the University of Miami Law School. "It's really unsettled right now. But the impulse seems to be, yes, look at everything you can because the more information, the better."

Those involved in the Zimmerman case appear to have been tripped up by social media on at least two occasions.

While questioning Jenna Lauer, a former neighbor of Zimmerman who testified she heard screams for help outside her townhome, prosecutor Bernie de la Rionda accused her of following Zimmerman's brother on Twitter. After taking a look at a Twitter page de la Rionda had pulled up on a computer, Lauer denied it, and it was clear from his questions that the prosecutor didn't understand quite how Twitter worked.

"I apologize," de la Rionda said.

On the defense side, an Instagram photo posted by attorney Don West's daughter became the subject of a prosecution motion for an inquiry. Prosecutors said the photo showing West eating ice cream with his daughters was posted after West's tense cross-examination with prosecution witness Rachel Jeantel last week. The caption read, "We beat stupidity celebration cones" and "dadkilledit." West said in a court filing Tuesday that the photo was taken a day before Jeantel testified and has nothing to do with her testimony. He called the prosecution's motion irresponsible and said he had nothing to do with the posting of the photo or its caption.

Lawyers in routine cases typically don't have time to scour the social media sites of potential jurors, though it has become more commonplace in highly publicized cases. It has become more common practice to vet the accounts of witnesses, as their posts may expose particular biases, motives or contradictions in their testimony, said David Hill, an Orlando criminal defense attorney.

"Like it or not, when it comes to Facebook and social media, it may not just be Big Brother watching you, but your friendly neighborhood criminal defense attorney," he said.

Hurricane Erick barrels up Mexico's Pacific coast

Hurricane Erick barreled up the western coast of Mexico Saturday, bringing with it the danger of flash floods and landslides, forecasters said.

As of 0001 GMT, Erick packed winds of 80 miles (130 kilometers) per hour as it moved to the northwest along the Mexican coastline about 85 miles south of Manzanillo, Mexico.

Heavy rains were falling over parts of southwestern Mexico, the US National Hurricane Center in Miami said, as the storm churned up the Pacific coast at about nine miles per hour.

A hurricane watch was in effect from Punta San Telmo to Cabo Corrientes, with tropical storm warnings for areas further west.

"Hurricane conditions are possible in the hurricane watch area tonight and Sunday," the NHC said in its latest bulletin.

"Tropical storm conditions are likely to spread westward across the Mexican coast in the warned area today through Sunday," it added.

"Swells generated by Erick are affecting the coast of southwest Mexico. These swells are likely to cause life-threatening surf and rip current conditions," it said.

The storm was expected to remain steady overnight and then weaken on Sunday without making landfall as it approached southern Baja California.

Mexico's national weather service has recommended the coastal population of Oaxaca, Guerrero, Michoacan, Colima and Jalisco get ready for torrential rains, powerful waves, flooding, landslides and strong winds.

The storm could drop up to eight inches of rainfall in some spots, the NHC warned, saying "these rains could cause life-threatening flash floods and mud slides."

Pop Icon Tiffany Spends The Week California Dreamin? Tonight on Celebrity Wife Swap

CELEBRITY WIFE SWAP Sunday 7/7/13 (8:00-9:00 PM) on ABC

ACTRESS NIA PEEPLES AND FORMER POP ICON TIFFANY SWAPS LIVES

?Nia Peeples/Tiffany? ? An actress and a former pop star swap lives and homes for one week. Nia Peeples is an actress and singer best known for roles on the television series ?Fame? and ?Pretty Little Liars.? She and her filmmaker husband, Sam, live in a mobile home on the beach in Malibu, California with her children, Christopher (23) and Sienna (14.). The family spend the majority of their time outside in the surf and the sand. Sam, a professed ?surfer dude,? plans his days around the daily surf reports and encourages the family to enjoy every moment, many times putting schoolwork, household chores and responsibilities on the back burner.

Former pop icon Tiffany shot to worldwide stardom with her self-titled, debut album. Today she resides outside of Nashville, Tennessee with her husband, Benn, and 20-year-old son Elijah. Both Tiffany and her husband work long hours; Benn with his car company and Tiffany ? when she?s not touring or performing ? at the vintage clothing boutique she owns.

When Tiffany arrives in Malibu, she learns that the ?guest room? in Nia?s home is a tent outside. Being a trooper, she spends the first night of the swap under the stars. Living in Nia?s shoes, Tiffany heads to the beach and learns how to surf and paddle board while spending time with Nia?s children, specifically sharing her love of music with Nia?s son, Christopher, who is an aspiring singer/songwriter.

Back in Nashville, Nia enjoys some Southern hospitality when Benn cooks a pork rib dinner for the family. While ribs are not something Nia and her family would choose to eat ? their diet typically consists of vegetable-based meals ? she decides to give it a try. At dinner, Nia observes that Benn is constantly connected to his cell phone working at his car business. With Benn at work and Elijah at school, she finds herself home alone and generally lonely when she?s not at the boutique, which turns out to be pretty overwhelming for her.

In ?Celebrity Wife Swap,? two mothers of celebrity families, each with opposing values, trade households, lifestyles and children (but not bedrooms) in a week-long challenge. In the first part of the exchange, each mom moves into the other?s home and agrees to follow a manual of ?household rules? written by the departing mother, including how to parent, manage their social life, do house work, unwind and more. Everything changes in the second half of the week, when ?new mommy? takes charge, introduces her own set of rules and runs the ?nest? her way. At the end of the week the two couples meet for the first time. In a raw, honest and highly-charged exchange of views, the couples will make frank assessments of each other and discuss their experiences, having had a very real taste of what life would be like in someone else?s family.

?Celebrity Wife Swap? is produced by Zodiak USA. Bruce Toms and Tony Yates serve as executive producers. The series is broadcast in 720 Progressive (720P), ABC?s selected HD format, with 5.1-channel sound. This program carries a TV-PG parental guideline.

Stocks hold onto gains after strong jobs report

(AP) ? The stock market is slightly higher after giving up early gains fueled by a strong jobs report.

The Dow Jones industrial average was up 93 points, or 0.6 percent, to 15,081 at 1 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time Friday. It rose as much as 116 points in the morning. The Standard & Poor's 500 index was up 10 points, or 0.6 percent, to 1,625. The Nasdaq composite index was up 21 points to 3,465.

The U.S. economy added 195,000 jobs in June, above the 165,000 expected. The report reinforced the idea that the Federal Reserve could pull back on its economic stimulus.

Healthy Marriage = Healthy Life | Psych Central News

By Rick Nauert PhD Senior News Editor
Reviewed by John M. Grohol, Psy.D. on July 4, 2013

Healthy Marriage = Healthy LifeA 20-year longitudinal study suggests people in happy marriages typically experience a healthy life.

In the study, Brigham Young University researchers found that people in happy marriages live less ?in sickness? but enjoy more of life ?in health.?

Rick Miller, a BYU family life researcher, found that as the quality of marriage holds up over the years, physical health holds up too.

?There?s evidence from previous research that marital conflict leads to poor health,? Miller said. ?But this study also shows happy marriages have a preventative component that keeps you in good health over the years.?

A previous BYU study caught national attention when it found that meaningful relationships help individuals live longer. The current study, published in the Journal of Marriage and Family, shows positive marriage relationships sustain health over the long run.

The study used data from a nationally representative sample of 1,681 married individuals followed over the course of two decades ? the longest study on marital quality and health to date.

Miller and colleagues measured marital quality in two ways: First, in terms of happiness and satisfaction, and, second, in terms of marital problems (Do you argue about money? Do you fight about in-laws?). Respondents then rated their health on a 1 (excellent) to 4 (poor) scale.

The results showed those with higher marital conflict were more likely to report poor health.

?The implication is that marital conflict is a risk factor for poor health,? Miller said. ?Couples that fight or argue frequently should get professional help to reduce their conflict because it is affecting their health.?

Miller hopes the mounting research on the importance of marriage catches the attention of policy makers. For example, Miller (and many colleagues) believe health insurance should cover marriage counseling because it can help shore up marriage and prevent future health problems.

To that end, sustaining a happy marriage also tends to inspire habits that lead to better health. Happily married spouses encourage each other to stay current on doctor appointments, sleep better, drink less and participate in healthy activities.

?When spouses have a bad day, in a happy marriage, they?re more likely to support each other and empathize with each other,? Miller said. ?That support reduces stress and helps buffer against a decline in health.?

This build is a bit tongue-in-cheek, as it features a minifig Elton John performing for modern-day tourists, a Lego Gandalf and Sigmund Freud (no doubt realizing how much Oedipus Rex reflects his inner fears and desires). With this exhibit, the Nicholson Museum is certainly pushing the envelope as far as making the Classics accessible (and appealing) to younger generations:

The Nicholson Museum, in Sydney University's quadrangle, is Australia's largest museum of antiquities and fast developing a reputation as one of the most innovative museums of its type for its integration of the ancient and contemporary world. Last year, more than 90,000 visitors viewed the Lego Colosseum, an increase of 25,000 people on the previous 12 months. Next year, the museum is planning a Lego Pompeii.

According to Senior curator of the Nicholson Museum, Michael Turner:

If we can create an extraordinary experience, an enormous LEGO model in a museum of antiquities, then it's likely that they'll never, ever forget it.

Ryan McNaught is the only Lego-certified professional in Australia (you'll remember him as the builder of this insane Lego Helicopter, that was recently destroyed by some teenage morons). As a Classicist, I love this build (anachronisms aside), there are so many fun little details from the Temple of Athena Nike to the stealing of the Elgin marbles. And as a Lego fangirl, I especially love seeing McNaught get the continued recognition he deserves. LEGO ergo sum. [Sydney Morning Herald]

Navy awards weaponized railgun manufacturing contract to BAE Systems

DNP Navy awards electromagnetic railgun manufacturing contract, proves we're living in the future

Just over 18 months after making its video debut, the Navy's electromagnetic railgun has a manufacturer. BAE Systems -- known for e-ink-powered tank camouflage, autonomous spiderbots and machine-gun-mounted lasers -- won the government contract and hopes to have phase-two prototypes ready "as early as next year." While the current design is capable of firing one shot, the Office of Navy Research hopes for six to ten shots per minute. If that doesn't scare you, consider this: The pulse-driven projectiles travel at Mach 6 and can hit targets over 100 nautical miles away. Don't worry, it's not too late to rethink that career of sailing the high seas as a pirate and get to work on that accounting degree instead.

Nice-guy Obama fails Turkey's democracy

The Obama administration has been far too solicitous of Turkey's Prime Minister Erdogan and his increasingly authoritarian ways. Its reasoning is based on the flawed assumption that being nice will ensure cooperation from this strategic ally. That hasn't been the case.

By Steven A. Cook,?Op-ed contributor / July 2, 2013

A man flies a kite on a roof at Taksim Square in Istanbul, Turkey, as thousands of protesters returned to the square on Saturday to demand justice for a demonstrator slain by police fire during demonstrations in June. Op-ed writer Steven A. Cook says: 'The lesson from Turkey's current drama is straightforward: The US can secure its strategic interests and maintain its ideals simultaneously.'

The US ambassador to Turkey, Francis Ricciardone, took a lot of criticism from Turkish activists when, after almost a month of street protests here, he affirmed Washington's support for Ankara in both good times and bad.

Given Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan's efforts to blame his sudden political problems on unidentified "foreign agents," "Zionists," and even the American Enterprise Institute think tank, the ambassador's diplomatic niceties were prudent. A strong American rebuke would have handed Mr. Erdogan a gift by making the United States ? not the demonstrations ? the story in Turkey.

For all of Washington's diplomatic deftness during the crisis, however, the Obama administration has been far too solicitous of Erdogan and his increasingly authoritarian ways over the past five years. Its reasoning is based on the flawed assumption that being nice will ensure cooperation from this strategic ally that straddles Europe and the greater Middle East.

Such a calculus is just another example of Washington choosing realism over idealism in foreign affairs. In this case, it would be far better for the US to err on the side of idealism. Washington has missed an opportunity to encourage Erdogan, who presided over impressive political reforms early in his tenure, to continue Turkey's transition to a liberal democracy.

When President Obama took office in January 2009, he was determined to improve US-Turkey relations after six years of tension over the American invasion of Iraq, which borders Turkey. Mr. Obama put Turkey on the itinerary for his first overseas visit that April, and worked hard to give meaning to the "model partnership."

There were good strategic reasons for righting the relationship. When the president first took stock of US foreign policy, he must have noted that Turkey sat at the center of all of Washington's pressing foreign-policy concerns. Ankara was involved in debates as diverse and important as the future of NATO, of which it is a member, and how to ensure a unified and federal Iraq.

There was also a sense among senior US policymakers ? even well before the Arab Spring uprisings ? that a prosperous and democratizing Turkey, under a party of Islamist patrimony no less, could somehow be a model for the Arab world.

Relations were not always smooth, however. The sharp deterioration of Turkey-Israel relations that began with the Israeli invasion of the Gaza Strip in late 2008 put Washington in an awkward position between two key allies. The first half of 2010 was particularly difficult with a string of miscommunications over nuclear negotiations with Iran's and Turkey's votes against additional United Nations sanctions on the Islamic Republic. These and other incidents had US officials wondering why Turkey "wasn't acting like a NATO ally."

Obama and Erdogan met in private at a Group of 20 summit in June 2010 and hashed out their differences. It was at that Toronto summit that the two leaders gained new respect for each other and built a friendship that began an alleged golden age in bilateral relations.

FTC approves settlement with HTC over logging software

FTC approves settlement with HTC over logging software

In late February the FTC and HTC came to a tentative settlement over the manufacturer's poorly secured software, which included HTC Loggers. The commission voted three to none, with one commissioner recused, to require the company to patch the vulnerabilities and develop a security program that would undergo an independent assessment every other year for the next two decades. The American arm of HTC will also be watched closely regarding its security and consumer privacy claims. Any statements that are found to be false or misleading could lead to fines of up to $16,000 per violation. With the public comment period closed, the FTC has cleared the last hurdle to enforcing the settlement. Let's just hope others are taking heed, last thing we need is second round of electronic privacy scandals. Oh, wait...

Microsoft's Xbox One coming to Japan in 2014

Microsofts Xbox One coming to Japan in 2014

It's never nice to be told you're a second class citizen, which is probably why Microsoft was reticent to mention when the Xbox One would launch in Japan. When 4Gamer cornered Japanese VP Yasuyuki Higuchi for answers, he conceded that the country was "tier two," and that the hardware wouldn't arrive there until 2014. On the upside, he did promise that the tier two countries wouldn't be waiting long after the North American release, but that's hardly going to sate early adopters with an eye on the local hero.

The ribosome: New target for antiprion medicines

July 2, 2013 ? New research results from Uppsala University, Sweden, show that the key to treating neurodegenerative prion diseases such as mad cow disease and Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease may lie in the ribosome, the protein synthesis machinery of the cell. The results were recently published in the Journal of Biological Chemistry.

Prion diseases are fatal neurodegenerative diseases caused by misfolding of prion proteins. Examples of prion diseases are scrapie in sheep, mad cow disease and Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease in human.

What triggers misfolding of the prion proteins to the amyloid disease form is an open question. The inadequate knowledge in the field about the factors involved in prion formation makes the discovery of effective medicines for prion diseases rather challenging.

"We have now shown that the protein folding activity of the ribosome (PFAR) is most likely involved in prion propagation and thus, can be a specific target for antiprion medicines. If we understand the mechanism fully, we will be able to find ways to stop that too.," says Suparna Sanyal, senior lecturer at the Department of Cell and Molecular Biology, Uppsala University .

The ribosome is the protein synthesis machinery of the cell. The mechanism of protein synthesis by the ribosome is well characterized, while PFAR is a rather recent discovery. PFAR is a ribosomal RNA dependent function of the large subunit of the ribosome irrespective of its source. The PFAR center closely overlaps the peptidyl transferase center although the nucleobases responsible for these two functions are not all common.

"Our results show that two prion inhibitors 6-aminophenanthridine and guanabenz acetate implement antiprion activity by binding to ribosomal RNA and inhibiting PFAR. Thus, the ribosome and more specifically PFAR is the new target for antiprion medicines. Furthermore, we have developed an in vitro PFAR assay, which can be used as a platform for screening prion inhibitors in a high-throughput fashion. This assay is much more time and cost-effective than standard prion assays," says Suparna Sanyal.

ATD: Microsoft Xbox head Don Mattrick leaving for unknown role (updated)

The president of Microsoft's Interactive Entertainment Business, Don Mattrick, is leaving the company according to a report at AllThingsD. His division oversees the Xbox gaming properties as well as the company's peripheral gaming initiatives. He's most recently known as the man who introduced the world to the Xbox One, as he took the stage on Microsoft's campus this past May to introduce the controller, next-gen Kinect sensor, and new console. He's been with the IEB department since 2010. He's gotten in trouble with consumers lately, after he gave dismissive answers about the Xbox One's always online policy and $499 price point. He's also the man who wrote Microsoft's public DRM reversal letter.

Furthermore, ATD says Mattrick could be headed to social gaming giant Zynga; the Bay Area-based company declined a comment to our sister site Joystiq. It's unclear who would step in to Mattrick's spot if he is indeed leaving. We've yet to hear back from Microsoft, though we'll update this post when we hear more.

Update: It's offical. He's the new CEO of Zynga, and you can read all about it right here.

Law requires Chinese to visit their aging parents

BEIJING (AP) ? Mothers and fathers aren't the only ones urging adult children to visit their parents. China's lawbooks are now issuing the same imperative.

New wording in the law requiring people to visit or keep in touch with their elderly parents or risk being sued came into force Monday, as China faces increasing difficulty in caring for its aging population.

The amended law does little to change the status quo, however, because elderly parents in China already have been suing their adult children for emotional support and the new wording does not specify how often people must visit or clarify penalties for those who do not.

It is primarily aimed at raising awareness of the issue, said one of the drafters, Xiao Jinming, a law professor at Shandong University. "It is mainly to stress the right of elderly people to ask for emotional support ... we want to emphasize there is such a need," he said.

Cleaning lady Wang Yi, 57, who lives alone in Shanghai, said the new law is "better than nothing." Her two sons work several hundred kilometers (miles) away in southern Guangdong province and she sees them only at an annual family reunion.

"It is too little, for sure, I think twice a year would be good," she said. "We Chinese people raise children to take care of us when we are old."

China's legislature amended the law in December following frequent reports of elderly parents neglected by their children. It says offspring of parents older than 60 should see that their daily, financial and spiritual needs are met.

Although respect for the elderly is deeply engrained in Chinese society, three decades of market reforms have accelerated the breakup of China's traditional extended family, and there are few affordable alternatives, such as retirement homes.

Xiao said even before the Law of Protection of Rights and Interests of the Aged was amended, there were several cases of elderly parents suing their children for emotional support. Court officials generally settle such cases by working out an arrangement for sons or daughters to agree to visit more frequently. Typically, no money is involved.

The number of people aged 60 and above in China is expected to jump from the current 185 million to 487 million, or 35 percent of the population, by 2053, according to figures from the China National Committee On Aging. The expanding ratio is due both an increase in life expectancy ? from 41 to 73 over five decades ? and by family planning policies that limit most urban families to a single child.

Rapid aging poses serious threats to the country's social and economic stability, as the burden of supporting the growing number of elderly passes to a proportionately shrinking working population and the social safety net remains weak.

Zhang Ye, a 36-year-old university lecturer from eastern Jiangsu Province, said the amended law was "unreasonable" and put too much pressure on people who migrate away from home in search of work or independence.

"For young people who are abroad or work really far away from their parents, it is just too hard and too expensive to visit their parents," she said. "I often go to visit my parents and call them ... (but) if a young person doesn't want to, I doubt such a law will work."
