GRANTS PASS, Ore. (AP) ? High winds on Thursday grounded an air search for a young Oklahoma man inspired by the movie "Into The Wild" to test himself against the wilderness in southeastern Oregon.

Harney County Sheriff Dave Glerup said the winds on Steen Mountain were too strong to fly safely, and they hoped for a break in the weather that would let them fly Saturday.

Dustin Self, 19, left his family home in the Oklahoma City suburb of Piedmont "to see if he could live in the wild," and to investigate some churches that practice a South American religion that uses a hallucinogenic tea as a sacrament, his parents said. One is in Ashland, and the other in Portland.

"I'm just so worried about him," said his mother, Tammy Self.

The Harney County Sheriff's Office and others searched for him on Tuesday on the northeast side of Steens Mountain after a rancher found his pickup truck had slid off a backcountry track and gotten stuck. Searchers on ATVs saw no tracks, but checked out remote cabins and worked their way up the mountain, with no sign of him before heavy snow and high winds curtailed their efforts, said Deputy Missy Ousley.

"We did everything we could to try to talk him out of it," said his mother. "He was leaving, no matter what."

The teen was well-prepared with gear he bought just before leaving, but had little experience of life in the wild beyond family camping trips, his parents said.

"He is not a survivalist," said his father, Victor Self, a manager at a box plant in Oklahoma City. "He is a very urban child."

His parents last heard from him March 15, when he called from the parking lot of a motel in northern Nevada where he was spending the night in the cab of his pickup. The next day, Dustin called his girlfriend in Austin, Texas, to say he was lost after his GPS had sent him onto a road along the east side of Steens Mountain in the high desert of southeastern Oregon.

Ousley said a storekeeper in Fields recalled him asking for directions to Lakeview, which would have taken him a different direction than where his truck was found.

A religious young man raised in a non-denominational Protestant church, Dustin had been searching for meaning in his life, his mother said. He read books like "Human Race: Get Off Your Knees," by David Icke, a former British sports reporter whose books about what he believes is really controlling life on earth are admired by conspiracy theorists. The last movie Dustin watched was "Into The Wild" about a young man, Christopher McCandless, who gives up his worldly goods to live in the Alaska wilderness, only to die there, perhaps from eating wild potatoes. A clean-cut bodybuilder in high school, Self had lately grown his hair long and wore a bandanna around his head.

"I think he got a lot off the Internet," his mother said.

Tammy Self said her son is a vegetarian, with no desire to kill animals to eat.

"He thought he was going to eat berries," she said. "We tried to tell him, berries don't grow in wintertime."

Tom Downs, the owner of Fields station, a gas station, cafe and motel at the south end of Steens Mountain, recalls seeing Self sleeping in his truck one morning last March when he and his wife came to open up for the day. Self said he was low on gas after getting turned around with his GPS and asked for directions to Lakeview.

Self's father called the Harney County Sheriff's Office on March 17, but a search along the route from Fields to Lakeview turned up nothing. He also filed a missing person report with his local police. Then on Monday, Dustin's truck was found. His backpack and camping gear were gone, but the keys, his computer, his GPS and some of his supply of protein bars and other food had been left behind.

"We're worried sick," said his father. "I just hope he's alive."

Bishop tells Delaware legislators that marriage is unique - The Dialog

Bishop Malooly wrote a letter to Delaware legislators Monday stating that marriage ?is a unique relationship between a man and a woman.?

The April 15 letter was sent four days after Delaware Gov. Jack Markell announced a bill to legalize same-sex marriage in the state. In 2011, Delaware legalized civil unions for same-sex couples.

In his letter, the bishop wrote that while the government can regulate marriage, it?s ?not theirs to define or redefine its essential makeup. It remains God?s design, a permanent union between a man and a woman.?

Bishop Malooly said his letter was not written ?to attack anyone, but rather to join the current public debate about marriage and to voice once again the God-given meaning and purpose of marriage.?

He wrote that God created marriage, a unique relationship and loving partnership between a man and a woman, for two purposes: ?the good and happiness of the couple and the continuation of the human race.?

Bishop Malooly acknowledged the current notion that marriage is ?just about love and commitment between two people,? an argument that supports the redefining of marriage to include persons of the same sex.

However, the bishop told lawmakers, while marriage is about love, ?it is also about the unique expression of love that only and man and woman as husband and wife can give to each other.? True marital union, he wrote, ?is impossible without the sexual difference. Sexual difference and the capacity to procreate is the very starting point for understanding why it is so important to protect and promote marriage as a union between one man and one woman.?

Marriage isn?t a label ?that can be attached to different types of relationships,? the bishop added.

Marriage ?is best described as a communion,? where, in the words of Scripture, ?the two become one flesh,?? the bishop wrote.

?No other relationship, no matter how loving or committed, can have this unique capacity to bring about new life. This is why sexual intimacy is reserved for married love.?

Marriage is the only union ?that has the capacity to do what God ordered: ?Be fruitful and multiply.??

With his April 15 letter, the bishop also sent lawmakers a copy of his February pastoral letter to Catholics on the church?s teachings on marriage. That letter, ?Marriage ? Gift from God,? is on The Dialog?s website, www.thedialog.org

Following is the text of the letter Bishop Malooly sent to legislators.

Dear Legislator:

I am sending you a copy of my pastoral letter on marriage dated February 2, 2013, as you consider House Bill 75, which proposes the State of Delaware?s recognition of same sex marriage. I wrote the pastoral letter on marriage and I now write to you, not to attack anyone, but rather to join the current public debate about marriage and to voice once again the God-given meaning and purpose of marriage.

Marriage is an ancient institution established by God as he breathed life into the human species. Holy Scripture tells us God created them ?male and female? (Genesis 1:27), and in so doing, God created marriage as a loving partnership between a man and a woman for two purposes: the good and the happiness of the couple and the continuation of the human race. Marriage is a unique relationship between a man and a woman.

As we contemplate the human person in all his/her aspects, we see the wisdom of God creating the two sexes, providing human persons the beautiful capacity to love one another deeply and to express that love in such a way that it has the capacity to create new life.

There is a popular argument that says marriage is just about love and commitment between two people, which argument supports the redefining of marriage to include persons of the same sex. Its implication is clear: if marriage is about love then any two adults who love each other should be free to marry. Such an idea has a wide appeal today. But love as well as freedom does not operate in a vacuum. Like our breathing depends on oxygen, love and marriage depend upon truth. A critical question to be asked: Does love have anything to do with the human body; with being a man or a woman? There follows the additional question: Is there anything unique about the love expressed between a man and a woman?

Marriage is indeed about love but it is also about the unique expression of that love that only a man and woman as husband and wife can give to each other. The beauty and the complementarity of the sexes is precisely the capacity to give life as the husband and wife give themselves completely to one another; as Holy Scripture says ?the two become one flesh? (Genesis 2:24). True marital union is impossible without the sexual difference. Sexual difference with the capacity to procreate is the very starting point for understanding why it is so important to protect and promote marriage as a union between one man and one woman. This is not arbitrary or discriminatory, rather, it is reflective of reality and truth.

Marriage is a special relationship. It is not simply a label that can be attached to different types of relationships. Marriage is unique because the commitment it calls for is best described as a communion, where in the words of Holy Scripture, ?the two become one flesh? (Genesis 2:24). No other relationship, no matter how loving or committed, can have this unique capacity to bring about new life. This is why sexual intimacy is reserved for married love. Marriage is the only context wherein sex between a man and woman can speak the true language of the total gift of self and which is open to the gifting of new life.

Marriage is the oldest human institution. It existed long before any human government that today attempts to redefine it. Despite the many variations marriage has undergone throughout the centuries in a whole range of cultures, it displays certain common and permanent characteristics. Safeguarding those characteristics helps to secure the well being of the family and, in turn, society as a whole. Marriage is not merely a human institution. Governments may find it necessary to regulate marriage in certain ways but it is not theirs to define or redefine its essential makeup. It remains God?s design, a permanent union between a man and a woman.

As you consider legislation which attempts to redefine marriage, I offer these comments which speak to the uniqueness of the union, the marriage of a man and a woman; the only union that has the capacity to do what God ordered: ??Be fruitful and multiply.?

Last-minute glitch postpones debut of new U.S. rocket

(Reuters) - A U.S. company hired by NASA to fly cargo to the International Space Station canceled plans to launch its new Antares rocket on a demonstration mission on Wednesday after a last-minute technical glitch, officials said.

The 13-story rocket developed by Orbital Sciences Corp had been slated to lift off from a new commercial spaceport in Virginia at 5 p.m. EDT (2100 GMT) and place a dummy cargo capsule into orbit.

The test flight is expected to clear the way for the company's trial cargo run to the International Space Station later this year.

If successful, Orbital Sciences would then start working on an eight-flight, $1.9 billion contract to fly supplies to the station for NASA.

About 12 minutes before launch from the Mid-Atlantic Regional Spaceport on Wallops Island, Virginia, an umbilical line on the rocket's upper-stage fell away prematurely, prompting a cancellation, said NASA launch commentator Kyle Herring.

The next launch attempt is targeted for no earlier than Friday, although weather at the Wallops Island Flight Facility could be a problem. Meteorologists are forecasting high winds and possible thunderstorms.

"You learn a little bit from every launch attempt," John Steinmeyer, a senior project manager with Dulles, Virginia-based Orbital Sciences, said during a NASA TV broadcast. "We'll take the lessons learned from today and move into another attempt as soon as it's safe to do so."

The company is one of two hired by NASA after the space shuttles were retired to fly cargo to the station, a $100 billion project of 15 nations that flies about 250 miles above the Earth.

Privately owned Space Exploration Technologies, or SpaceX, completed its test flights in 2010 and has successfully carried out two of 12 planned cargo runs to the station for NASA under a $1.6 billion contract.

It?s a sign of how well relentless propagandizing works that Joe Stiglitz has to devote a lengthy op-ed in the New York Times to debunking the idea that our income tax system, whose salient characteristic is low tax burdens for the rich, is good for anyone other than the rich. Economists have increasingly taken note of the fact that the US experiment in lowering taxes produced the opposite of the outcomes that were claimed for it, namely, spurring growth and increasing incomes in all cohorts (the barmy ?trickle down? theory). Cross-country comparisons show that advanced economies with higher growth rates, like Germany, typically tax their wealthy more, showing that high taxes on the rich are not a negative for growth. Instead, giving tax breaks to the rich has turbo-charged rentier capitalism:

Remember, the low tax rates at the top were supposed to spur savings and hard work, and thus economic growth. They didn?t. Indeed, the household savings rate fell to a record level of near zero after President George W. Bush?s two rounds of cuts, in 2001 and 2003, on taxes on dividends and capital gains. What low tax rates at the top did do was increase the return on rent-seeking. It flourished, which meant that growth slowed and inequality grew. This is a pattern that has now been observed across countries. Contrary to the warnings of those who want to preserve their privileges, countries that have increased their top tax bracket have not grown more slowly. Another piece of evidence is here at home: if the efforts at the top were resulting in our entire economic engine?s doing better, we would expect everyone to benefit. If they were engaged in rent-seeking, as their incomes increased, we?d expect that of others to decrease. And that?s exactly what?s been happening. Incomes in the middle, and even the bottom, have been stagnating or falling.

Stiglitz provides a compelling summary of how the rich get favored treatment:

The richest 400 individual taxpayers, with an average income of more than $200 million, pay less than 20 percent of their income in taxes ? far lower than mere millionaires, who pay about 25 percent of their income in taxes, and about the same as those earning a mere $200,000 to $500,000. And in 2009, 116 of the top 400 earners ? almost a third ? paid less than 15 percent of their income in taxes?.

With such low effective tax rates ? and, importantly, the low tax rate of 20 percent on income from capital gains ? it?s not a huge surprise that the share of income going to the top 1 percent has doubled since 1979, and that the share going to the top 0.1 percent has almost tripled, according to the economists Thomas Piketty and Emmanuel Saez. Recall that the wealthiest 1 percent of Americans own about 40 percent of the nation?s wealth, and the picture becomes even more disturbing.

Stiglitz points out that not only are our tax rates on top earners strikingly low by OECD standards, but the income level at which they kick in are also higher than in most other advanced economies. And that is before you factor in that the rich for the most part don?t make their money through income but capital gains, which are taxed at lower rates. That preferable treatment has been exploited flagrantly by the hedge fund and private equity industries, which have been able to structure their funds so that the overwhelming majority of the income they get from managing the funds, which is labor income, is taxed at capital gains rates. And the worst is that the Masters of the Universe act as if that is perfectly reasonable. Stiglitz objects:

Some Wall Street financiers are able to pay taxes at lower capital gains tax rates on income that comes from managing assets for private equity funds or hedge funds. But why should managing financial assets be treated any differently from managing people, or making discoveries? Of course, those in finance say they are essential. But so are doctors, lawyers, teachers and everyone else who contributes to making our complex society work. They say they are necessary for job creation. But in fact, many of the private equity firms that have excelled in exploiting the carried interest loophole are actually job destroyers; they excel in restructuring firms to ?save? on labor costs, often by moving jobs abroad.

And then the good professor turns to corporate tax breaks, citing poster child GE, which has paid on average less than 2% of its income in taxes since 2002. The picture is likely even worse than these figures suggest since corporations and wealthy individuals can hide income tax havens.

I do have a minor quibble with Stiglitz catering to the deficit scare-mongers by pointing out that a fairer system would collect more taxes and reduce budget squabbles. He closes by reminding us:

It doesn?t have to be this way. We could have a much simpler tax system without all the distortions ? a society where those who clip coupons for a living pay the same taxes as someone with the same income who works in a factory; where someone who earns his income from saving companies pays the same tax as a doctor who makes the income by saving lives; where someone who earns his income from financial innovations pays the same taxes as a someone who does research to create real innovations that transform our economy and society. We could have a tax system that encourages good things like hard work and thrift and discourages bad things, like rent-seeking, gambling, financial speculation and pollution.

Of course, some people will object, and they are the ones who benefit from complexity, either by being loophole creators and users, or part of the service industry that caters to them. It?s time ordinary citizens look hard at who is peddling ?go easy on the rich? advice and discount the source.
