Three of the five Great Lakes?Huron, Superior and Erie?are awash in plastic. But it's not the work of a Christo-like landscape artist covering the waterfront. Rather, small plastic beads, known as micro plastic, are the offenders, according to survey results to be published this summer in Marine Pollution Bulletin. "The highest counts were in the micro plastic category, less than a millimeter in diameter," explained chemist Sherri "Sam" Mason of the State University of New York at Fredonia, who led the Great Lakes plastic pollution survey last July. "Under the scanning electron microscope, many of the particles we found were perfectly spherical plastic balls."
Cosmetics manufacturers use these micro beads, or micro exfoliates, as abrasives in facial and body scrubs. They are too tiny for water treatment plants to filter, so they wash down the drain and into the Great Lakes. The biggest worry: fish such as yellow perch or turtles and seagulls think of them as dinner. If fish or birds eat the inert beads, the material can deprive them of nutrients from real food or get lodged in their stomachs or intestines, blocking digestive systems.
In early April, at the 245th National Meeting & Exposition of the American Chemical Society in New Orleans, chemist Lorena Rios of the University of Wisconsin?Superior, announced that her team found 1,500 to 1.7 million plastic particles per square mile (2.5 square kilometers) in the lakes, with the highest concentration in Lake Erie. Rios is collaborating on the study with Mason and 5 Gyres Institute, a Los Angeles-based research group studying garbage patches in five subtropical gyres in the Atlantic, Pacific and Southern oceans.
Typically, the oceans contain a higher percentage of debris in the one- to five-millimeter-diameter size, whereas, for unknown reasons, the three Great Lakes the team studied have a higher concentration, approximately 85 percent, of micro plastics measuring less than one millimeter in diameter.
Rios did not find any plastic in the fish samples she tested, but they were all from Lake Superior, which has less of a problem because of the way water flows through the lakes. "Lake Superior had a little less plastic than Lake Huron, which was far less than Lake Erie," Rios says. "So, it will be really interesting to see [this summer] if the counts in Lake Ontario [downstream from Erie] are even higher."
The Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Fairport Fisheries Research Station has found plastic in yellow perch during their ongoing diet-analysis studies, according to Rios. Although they have not published any data about plastic in the fish guts, they will begin sending fish to her for analysis. "This summer, we're going to look for the presence of plastics in the diet, and if we find any, send it to Dr. Rios to confirm the type of polymers in the plastics," confirms fish biologist Ann Marie Gorman of the Fairport Harbor Fish Research Unit.
Rios's background includes studying plastic debris and persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in the Pacific garbage patch. Her chemical analysis of the Lake Erie samples revealed varying levels of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), the product of incomplete combustion usually found near steel mill coking plants or from burning wood or petroleum products. In the mix was also polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and other organochlorides such as the potent and poisonous insecticide DDT. PCBs were used in electric transformers and motors, until Congress banned them from production in 1979 because of their ability to cause cancer in humans.
Rios reports that the bits of plastic, essentially "solid oil," absorb the chemicals like a sponge. The concentration of PAHs in Lake Erie is twice as high as that in the Atlantic because the ocean?s size dilutes the little pellets.

George Lucas and Mellody Hobson.
The force was undoubtedly with "Star Wars" creator George Lucas as he wed longtime girlfriend Mellody Hobson Saturday afternoon, as a director's spokesperson confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter.
The pair tied the knot at Lucas' Skywalker Ranch in Marin County, Calif. surrounded by and attended to by a bevy of stars: Former Senator Bill Bradley gave away the bride, PBS' Bill Moyers officiated, Van Morrison and Janelle Monae performed at the reception, Steven Spielberg offered a toast and Francis Ford Coppola read a poem by Maya Angelou.
But there was room for Lucas' family as well: His son Jett was best man and his daughter Amanda and Katie were bridesmaids.
Samuel L. Jackson (who played Jedi Mace Windu in the "Star Wars" prequels" tweeted good wishes to the couple:
And Ron Howard, who attended the ceremony, later tweeted his report:
The pair were engaged in January after first meeting in 2006; Hobson, who serves on the board of directors for Hollywood studio Dreamworks Animation SKG Inc., cosmetics company Estee Lauder Companies Inc., coffeehouse chain Starbucks Corp. and Internet coupon company Groupon Inc., is 44. Lucas is 69.

Indiana leopard: An Indiana woman and her boyfriend shot and killed a leopard that they spotted prowling in their backyard. Wait, they have leopards in Indiana?

Your double-take is completely understandable, though, as leopards are not native to the Hoosier State. The nine known subspecies of leopard make their homes in Africa and across Asia, the largest habitat of any species of big cat. But definitely not Indiana.
Or so we thought. According to news reports, a Charlestown, Ind., woman and her boyfriend spotted a large cat in the woods at the edge of her property. Fearing for the safety of the woman's housecats after several pets in her neighborhood had been attacked, the boyfriend shot and killed the animal Thursday, thinking it was a bobcat.
It wasn't. It was a much bigger cat.?
"The cat in these photographs has been identified tentatively as a leopard," said an official with the?state's Department of Natural Resources told a local news station. "Perhaps an immature cat about 9 months old. DNR is attempting to determine who it belonged to, or where it came from. In any case, it would be someone's pet, since leopards are not native to Indiana, or for that matter, to North America," the official added.
DNR officials are now investigating where the animal came from. The owner of a nearby wildlife refuge center said that all of his animals were accounted for.
Owning a leopard in Indiana is legal, but you need to have a permit.
Would the leopard have eaten the woman's cats if given the chance? Leopards are opportunistic hunters, dining on everything from insects to antelopes, as well as rodents, birds, reptiles, and some primates.?
Domestic cats and leopards are part of the same taxonomic family. So would that make a leopard eating a cat the equivalent of a human eating a gorilla? Perhaps, but such semi-cannibalism is common in nature. Dogs sometimes eat foxes. Wolves sometimes eat dogs. And, indeed, humans sometimes eat gorillas. Perhaps the woman was right to be concerned.
In general, it's a good idea to be circumspect in the presence of large felines, especially in Indiana. On Friday, a worker cleaning a cage at a wildlife refuge in Center Point, Ind., was mauled by a tiger after forgetting to close a gate. Her co-workers managed to free her from the tiger's jaws, and she is now recovering.

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) ? Major government and media websites in South and North Korea were shut down for hours Tuesday on the 63rd anniversary of the start of the Korean War, and Seoul said its sites were hacked and alerted people to take security measures against cyberattacks.
It was not immediately clear if the shutdown of North Korean websites, including those belong to Air Koryo and the Rodong Sinmun newspaper, was due to those sites being hacked. Rodong Sinmun, Uriminzokkiri and Naenara websites were operational a few hours later.
South Korean National Intelligence Service officials said they were investigating what may have caused the shutdown of the North Korean websites, and North Korea didn't make any immediate comment.
Seoul said experts were also investigating attacks on the websites of the South Korean presidential Blue House and prime minister's office, and some media servers.
Tuesday's attacks in South Korea did not appear to be as serious as a March cyberattack that shut down tens of thousands of computers and servers at South Korean broadcasters and banks. There were no initial reports Tuesday that banks had been hit or that sensitive military or other key infrastructure had been compromised.
It wasn't immediately clear who was responsible, and North and South Korea have traded accusations of cyberattacks in recent years.
Operators of several Twitter accounts who purported to be part of a global hackers' collective claimed that they attacked North Korean websites. The Associated Press received no answer to several requests to speak to the Twitter users. Shin Hong-soon, an official at South Korea's science ministry in charge of online security, said that the government was not able to confirm whether these hackers were linked to Tuesday's attack on South Korean websites.
South Korean officials blamed Pyongyang for the March attacks and said in April that an initial investigation pointed to a North Korean military-run spy agency as the culprit.
North Korea in recent weeks has pushed for diplomatic talks with Washington. But tensions ran high on the Korean Peninsula in March and April, with North Korea delivering regular threats over U.N. sanctions and U.S.-South Korean military drills.
Investigators detected similarities between the March cyberattack and past hacking attributed to the North Korean spy agency, including the recycling of 30 previously used malware programs ? out of a total of 76 used in the attack, South Korea's internet security agency said.
The March 20 cyberattack struck 48,000 computers and servers, hampering banks for two to five days. Officials have said that no bank records or personal data were compromised. Staffers at TV broadcasters KBS, MBC and YTN were unable to log on to news systems for several days, although programming continued during that period. No government, military or infrastructure targets were affected.
South Korea's National Intelligence Service said North Korea was behind a denial of service attack in 2009 that crippled dozens of websites, including that of the presidential office. Seoul also believes the North was responsible for cyberattacks on servers of Nonghyup bank in 2011 and Joongang Ilbo, a national daily newspaper, in 2012.
North Korea also blamed South Korea and the United States for cyberattacks in March that temporarily disabled Internet access and websites in North Korea, where a small number of people can go online.
Experts believe North Korea trains large teams of cyber warriors and that the South and its allies should be prepared against possible attacks on key infrastructure and military systems. If the inter-Korean conflict were to move into cyberspace, South Korea's deeply wired society would have more to lose than North Korea's, which largely remains offline.

Apple has released beta 2 of its mobile OS for developers just two weeks after WWDC where the company showed off iOS 7. This release also supports iPads and iPad minis.
Other than that, there's a new Voice Memos app, which seems to have been inspired by the Flip camera. Siri can now yammer at you in a female or male voice, too. The Reminders app, panoramic camera UI and the addition of avatars in group iMessages, along with general bug fixes and performance tweaks round out this version. Unfortunately the stock app icons also appear to be unchanged
