Seattle University has an exciting, dynamic opportunity for a Associate Controller to join our community.
Under the general direction of the Controller, this position will assume responsibility for oversight of Accounts Payable, Payroll, Treasury, General Accounting, and Compliance.
This position is also responsible for preparation of financial reports and managing the general ledger accounts.
Essential Job Functions
Ensures the timely and accurate recording of accounting transactions in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles.
Researches and implements new accounting guidance and standards.
Manages the monthly and fiscal year accounting closing processes in coordination with the Director and Associate Director of Accounting & Information Systems.
Prepares and processes journal entries. Approves journal entries when appropriate.
Assists in management of the year-end audit process and prepares the audit work papers. Acts as the main day-to-day contact for the external audit team.
Oversees the accounting on grants to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local guidelines.
Provides financial information for the preparation of the federal tax return.
Provides information on budgets and expenditures to departmental administrators to assist them in making informed financial decisions.
Prepares internal and external reports such as questionnaires and census reports requested by auditors and or external agencies.
Recommends and implements policies and procedures to improve customer service, ensure internal controls are operating effectively, and streamline operations.
Coordinates the documentation of internal control processes within the departments the position oversees. Works with the Controller to identify and resolve any control weaknesses.
Assists in making financial and management decisions for the Controller's Office.
Monitors and ensures the operation of university-wide policies and internal controls.
Develops and documents policies and procedures for accounting operations.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in accounting or business administration and a minimum of five years of related experience with progressive management responsibilities or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Strong analytical skills with demonstrated experience compiling financial statements and accounting for complex transactions. Experience with fund accounting is required. Excellent written and verbal communication and decision-making skills are required. Ability to work effectively in a collegial manner across all levels of the institution and the ability to maintain a professional problem solving demeanor.
Strong technical and computer skills required with highly developed attention to detail. Ability to effectively manage deadlines and multiple priorities. Demonstrated ability to use independent judgment and show initiative when resolving issues. Strong work ethic. Ability to handle stressful situations. Knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles ( GAAP).
Knowledge of computer operations, software, information storage and retrieval techniques and methods particularly as applied to accounting functions.

CPA strongly preferred with experience in higher education or other not-for-profit organization.
