In a sit-down interview with?The New Republic released today, President Barack Obama cast blame on Fox News and Rush Limbaugh for shaping compromise as a "dirty word."

Obama talked about the recent deal to avert the fiscal cliff, saying he thought House Speaker "genuinely wanted" to come to a deal sooner but felt he was vulnerable to attack from the right.

Here's the relevant excerpt:

I think if you talk privately to Democrats and Republicans, particularly those who have been around for a while, they long for the days when they could socialize and introduce bipartisan legislation and feel productive. So I don't think the issue is whether or not there are people of goodwill in either party that want to get something done. I think what we really have to do is change some of the incentive structures so that people feel liberated to pursue some common ground.

One of the biggest factors is going to be how the media shapes debates. If a Republican member of Congress is not punished on Fox News or by Rush Limbaugh for working with a Democrat on a bill of common interest, then you'll see more of them doing it.

I think John Boehner genuinely wanted to get a deal done, but it was hard to do in part because his caucus is more conservative probably than most Republican leaders are, and partly because he is vulnerable to attack for compromising Republican principles and working with Obama.

Obama said the same thing happens with the far left ? but that "left-leaning media outlets" are more willing to accept compromise. In turn, that's why Obama, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi are willing to compromise, Obama said.

Obama also criticized how the media in general shapes partisan gridlock in Washington as a two-party issue. He suggested that it's a handful of conservative Republicans preventing compromise:

[L]et me be clear. There's not a ? there's no equivalence there. In fact, that's one of the biggest problems we've got in how folks report about Washington right now, because I think journalists rightly value the appearance of impartiality and objectivity. And so the default position for reporting is to say, "A plague on both their houses." On almost every issue, it's, "Well, Democrats and Republicans can't agree"?as opposed to looking at why is it that they can't agree. Who exactly is preventing us from agreeing?

On Monday 28 January, Fortnum & Mason launches a pop-up British Bakery. It runs until April, and on the launch day chef Mark Hix, who?ll be contributing his own lovingly made comestibles to the pop-up (he?s conveniently just released a book about baking) will give a class at 1pm.

Convivial food and drink events-maker Tweat Up (tag line: ?So far no deaths or arrests?) hosts a stock-clearing event this Saturday evening, at the Old Street end of City Road.

Students may not have the best reputation for culinary capability but fear not: The Stu is running a food and drink festival this weekend with chefs on hand to show flummoxed freshers what to do. Like many a dormitory larder, details are skimpy, but we do know that it?s at UCL on Saturday 26 January.

At 8am on Monday, 28 January, Michel Roux Jr will be hosting a cookery demonstration and Q&A session at the monolithic Whole Foods store in Kensington. ?25 gets you breakfast and the rare chance of firing a few probing questions at the Masterchef presenter.

As of this week, the KERB street food market has rocked up in the City ? beside the Gherkin on Thursdays, and at CityPoint, near Moorgate, on Fridays. Six traders will be at each site.

YouSendIt (for iPhone)

Who among us hasn't felt the sting that comes when an email fails to reach its intended recipient due to a mammoth file attachment? YouSendIt specializes in remedying that problem by allowing users to upload large files to its servers and then share the simple, lightweight generated link with others. The company's revamped iPhone and iPod touch app not only lets you email large files with no worries, but lets you digitally sign documents and store files in the cloud as well. If any of those features sound appealing, the free YouSendIt app is worth a download.

The Basics
You start by creating a free account from within the app or login with your credentials should already have an account. After doing so, you're taken to the YouSendIt home screen where four icons live: My Folders, Send, Sign, and Store.

Tapping Send lets you upload a file from your My Folders, Photo Library, or Camera folders to YouSendIt's servers and then key in an email address. I like that YouSendIt displays how much data has been transferred so that you have a sense of how long the entire process will take. Once the email lands in the recipient's mailbox, YouSendIt sends you a confirmation email stating that the message was delivered. Much better than a bounce-back notification, eh?

In my testing on a relatively clean iPhone 5?YouSendIt for iPhone crashed a few times. The good news is that when I relaunched the app, it picked up where I let off pre-crash.

E-Signatures
YouSendIt now lets you digitally sign documents?an incredibly useful feature if you've ever had to Hancock a digital document. Here's how it works: when you receive a document via email, tap and hold the attachment, select Open in YouSendIt, and choose a destination folder. Tapping "Quick Sign" opens a blank area where you can scribble in a signature, change the font, or enlarge the signature's size.

That said, it's difficult to key in a signature while holding an iPhone vertically, as the screen slides from right to left as you write. Turning the phone horizontally, however, makes the process much easier as it scrolls at the pace that you finger your signature. You can save your e-signature for use at a later time, which is very handy.

YouSendIt also acts as a file storage service. Bringing a finger to "Store" lets you save a file to your allotted YouSendIt storage space.

Pricing and File Management
How you use YouSendIt directly corresponds to your account type. Free account holders can store a maximum of 2GB of data, five e-signatures, and upload files up to 50MB in size. Pro accounts (starting at $9.99 per month) house 5GB of data, hold 10 e-signatures, and let you upload 2GB files at a time. Pro Plus accounts (starting at $14.99 per month) one-up Pro accounts by offering unlimited file storage and e-signatures. There's a plan for nearly every user scenario.

Swiping over a folder or file opens the Open In, Email Link, Copy Link, Rename, and Delete options. I like that a user has to swipe to reveal these options as it keeps the interface uncluttered. My Folders offers additional options when you tap the drop-down arrow: Store, "Add New Folders, Sort Files, and Organize. This option set proves essential to keeping my YouSendIt files and folders organized,

A Highly Useful App
YouSendIt is an app you should have on your iPhone or iPod touch if you frequently find yourself in situations where you need to email large files. The e-signature feature is welcome bonus feature that proves equally useful. The crashes were a bit irritating, but they didn't stop me from thoroughly enjoying the app. YouSendIt is a highly recommended convenience utility for the iPhone.

Surprise your husband (or wife) with a hotel experience at home! Make up your bed with crisp, white sheets and put a couple mints on the pillows. Have a dinner menu laying on the pillows for ?room service?. Have dinner on serving trays in your room and eat on the bed while watching a movie (assuming there is a TV in your room)!

There is something about dipping food in cheese and chocolate that is just.. sexy. Light some candles, turn on some good music, and enjoy!

Political stakes high as Clinton testifies on Benghazi

The political stakes will be high Wednesday morning when Secretary of State Hillary Clinton testifies before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee about her role in the events leading up to the September attack on a U.S. diplomatic facility in Benghazi, Libya, that resulted in the killing of Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans.

The stakes will also be high for a Republican member of the committee, Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida, whom some pundits see as a possible presidential candidate in 2016. It will be a rare instance when one potential White House hopeful gets an opportunity to interrogate a potential rival from the opposing party. Clinton herself is thought to be a strong contender for the Democratic nomination, should she chose to throw her hat into the ring.

Rubio said Tuesday that he hoped Clinton?s testimony would shed light on ?the decision-making process in terms of the amount of security that was at the consulate. She has a unique insight that no one else in the State Department can offer, so we look forward to hearing about that.??

Last month, a report issued by the Accountability Review Board (appointed by Clinton to investigate the attack) blamed State Department officials for ?systemic failures and leadership and management deficiencies? that led to protection for the Benghazi facility that was ?grossly inadequate to deal with the attack that took place.?

Rubio said Tuesday that one aspect of the report that bothered him was ?how much blame was put on lower-level officials in the State Department when in fact this (Benghazi) is a high-profile assignment, a high-profile installation, where we should have been aware of some of the security risks that existed.?

In an interview last October, Clinton said, ?I take responsibility. I?m in charge of the State Department, 60,000-plus people all over the world, 275 posts. The president and the vice president certainly wouldn?t be knowledgeable about specific decisions that are made by security professionals.?

'Political charade'
The furor over the Benghazi attack has already helped derail one possible nominee to replace Clinton at the State Department, United Nations Ambassador Susan Rice, whom Republicans assailed for using administration talking points that portrayed the incident as a spontaneous response to an inflammatory anti-Islamic video.

Asked whether there was any way that Wednesday?s hearing could not become a political event or spectacle, Rubio responded, ?Everyone here takes their job seriously. We understand that everyone involved cared for and highly valued the people whose lives were lost. But mistakes were made and it?s important to understand why they were made and how they were made so that they?re never made again.?

Sen. Robert Menendez, D-N.J., talks about Wednesday's Benghazi hearings and previews Sen. John Kerry's upcoming confirmation hearing.

A newly elected Democratic member of the Foreign Relations Committee, Sen. Chris Murphy of Connecticut, said Tuesday, ?My perspective is looking forward. I want to understand how we can better secure (U.S. diplomatic) complexes across the globe and how we can make the case here in Washington that we need the money to do it. There were resource pressures on the State Department to make decisions on security and we need to be able to have the ammunition to make the case here to increase their budget.?

Murphy said he did not see the question of whether Clinton was personally responsible for lapses in security at the Benghazi facility as the central issue in the hearing. ?The decisions that were made (regarding security in Benghazi) clearly didn?t reach Secretary Clinton?s desk and I want her thoughts on how we make sure this doesn?t happen again,? the Connecticut Democrat said.

Murphy, who served three terms in the House before winning a Senate seat, criticized Republicans on the House Oversight Committee for politicizing the Benghazi attack and for running a Benghazi hearing last year that he called ?a debacle, a political charade. I?m hopeful that tomorrow?s hearing won?t be the same.?

Stockpiled weapons?
One senator not on the Foreign Affairs Committee but who has led the call for the Obama administration to be more forthcoming about the attack, Sen. Kelly Ayotte, R-N.H., said she hoped to find out from Clinton?s testimony what Clinton was told about security threats to the U.S. facility and what she was told about prior attacks on the facility. She asked, ?Does she believe in the characterization that the security was substantial and significant? That was the characterization that Ambassador Rice gave to the nation. And what conversations did she have with the president about securing the consulate??

Ayotte?made the connection Tuesday between the turmoil in Libya ? in which jihadists seized weapons stockpiles that had been amassed by the regime of toppled dictator Moammar Gadhafi ? and the danger of a similar outcome in Syria, where the security of the Assad regime?s chemical weapons stockpiles is doubt.

Ayotte, a member of a bipartisan Senate delegation that just returned from the Middle East, said, ?We have seen the lesson learned, for example, in Libya.?

She said on the Senate delegation?s trip, ?We heard in Egypt about weapons from Libya being shipped to the Sinai from Libya. There are reports that there may be connections between weapons from Libya and the (hostage taking) incident in Algeria (in which 37 were killed). We heard from leaders in the Middle East that these weapons are going throughout the Middle East from Libya. We?ve heard concerns about weapons (from Libya) getting the wrong hands?. When you don?t secure weapons and they get in the wrong hands, you put tools in the hands of terrorists.?

A theme from Rubio and other Republicans has been the Obama administration got engaged ?too late? and ?not decisively enough? in Libya, allowing chaos to prevail in some of the country. ?The reason why there are all these multiple militias in Libya is because this was a protracted conflict that created the opportunity and the space for these militias to form ? similar to what we?re seeing now in Syria,? Rubio said after a Dec. 20 Foreign Relations Committee hearing.
